New Books Valuable to Designers

There has been such a plethora of software hitting the shelves over the past few months that I haven’t given much attention to all the great books that have been released to make using this software a little easier for the design professional. The following are six of my favorite technical guides released over the past months:

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book (Adobe Press) - I’ve gained much appreciation for the Classroom in a Book series over the years. As with previous titles in this series, this Photoshop version includes a CD with materials which can be used as the reader goes through the included lessons. It’s like going to class without leaving the office. This book has been on the market for a few months, but with the constant demand for help with Photoshop I thought it important to include it in my list. $45 US/$70 CAN/$75 AUD. ISBN 0-321-1152-7.

The Robyn Williams Mac OS X Book (Peachpit Press) - I was on the road to help with an OS X emergency at a newspaper earlier this week. What book do you think I took with me? You guessed it: The Robyn Williams Mac OS X Book. Loaded with almost 800 pages of easy-to-read technical information, this is my favorite. At $30 US/$47 CAN/$50 AUD, this book is a steal. ISBN 0-321-16966-2.

Windows XP KillerTips (New Riders) - New Riders has released several worthwhile titles over the past few weeks. One of these is Windows XP KillerTips, by Kleber Stephenson. This book reminds me a lot of Peachpit’s Quickstart series, only with color screenshots and illustrations. Included are more than 400 shortcut tips showing users the fastest ways to use Windows XP. $30 US/$47 CAD/ $50 AUD. ISBN 0-7357-1357-X.

Unusually Useful Web Book (New Riders) - By June Cohen, this book covers the bases. Included sections like “10 Steps to Website Success,” “50 Ways to Increase Traffic,” “8 Common Errors to Fix Right Now,” and “17 Ways to Speed Up Your Site,” this books is must for your webmaster. $35 US/$55 CAN/ $58 AUD. ISBN 0-7357-1206-9.

Mac OS X Security (New Riders) - Co-authors Bruce Potter, Preston Norvell and Brian Wotring, provide step-by-step instruction on complex server integrations and how to secure applications and services in an enterprise network environment. From securing a single workstation to enterprise integration, Mac OS X Security is an excellent source for practical examples and usable solutions. $40 US/$63 CAN/$65 AUD. ISBN 0-7357-1348-0.

The Mac OS X Conversion Kit: 9 to 10 Side by Side (Peachpit Press) - I saved the best for last. This book, by Scott Kelby, is created for OS 9 users who are converting to OS X. Individual tasks are shown on the left pages; and on the right pages you are shown how the same task is accomplished in OS X. New OS X users will love this book. $30 US/$46 CAN/$49 AUS. ISBN 0-7357-1354-5.
