New Books Fit Nicely on Newspaper Library Shelf
Three excellent books for newspaper designers and technology staff persons arrived in the mail this week. All three should be available by the time you read this:

Real World InDesign CS2, by Olav Kvern and David Blatner. Another worthwhile addition to the Real World series. Unlike Peachpits Quickstart series, which is my choice for quick reference guides, Real World InDesign CS2 is for designers who want to move deep into the workings of InDesign. A few of the topics include:

- Mastering advanced tools

- Working with tables

- Working with XML, HTML and hyperlinks

- Mastering colors, tints and gradients

- Writing and running scripts in InDesign

Real World InDesign CS2, from Adobe Press, is available online at www.peachpit.com. ISBN 0-321-32202-9. $50 (US) / $67 (CAN) / $80 (AUS).

Mac OS X Help Line (Tiger Edition), by Ted Landau. Talk about a book that covers it all. This guide to OS X packs over 1,100 pages of information between its covers. Ladnau has one of my favorite technical authors since he wrote Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters in 1993. From starting up to using Spotlight, this book offers tremendous support for Mac users. Readers will learn:

- How to investigate and fix problems in OS 10.4

- Methods for diagnosing freezes, crashes and unexpected quits

- Mastering OS X permissions

- Setting up and maintaining a network

Mac OS X Help Line (Tiger Edition), from Peachpit Press, is available online at www.peachpit.com. ISBN 0-321-33429-9. $50 (US) / $70 (CAN) / $85 (AUS).

Ive been waiting for The Adobe InCopy CS2 Book for some time. Written by Adam Pratt and Mike Richman, this guide is the first book dedicated exclusively to learning Adobe InCopy. I was starting to think I was going to have to write a book to give out to newspapers while training them in the InCopy/InDesign workflow. Thankfully, Pratt and Richman have created a detailed, easy-to-understand, reference guide to InCopy.

The Adobe InCopy CS2 Book, from Adobe Press, is available online at www.peachpit.com. ISBN 0-321-33705-0. $35 (US) / $47 (CAN) / $59 (AUS).
